Treatment Approaches

Child/Adolescent Focused Therapy

Children (3 - 10 years old)
Adolescents (11 - 19 years old)

Children and adolescents can face a range of difficult problems in their lives that might include sadness, anxiety, academic stress, and family conflicts. They need to learn how to understand, control and share their emotions appropriately. They also may struggle to control their behavior and the expectations of their parents, guardians and teachers. Dr. Toso helps children to work through these issues and make better choices in their lives.

Family Systems Therapy

In family therapy, Dr. Toso works with families and couples in intimate relationships to nurture change and development. Dr. Toso tends to view change in terms of the developmental stage of the children/adolescents along with the systems of interaction between family members. Dr. Toso emphasizes family relationships as an important factor in psychological health.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

One of the most effective treatments for a wide range of emotional problems, known as cognitive therapy, deals with the way you think about, perceive, and interpret everything that is important to you including:

  • Your views about yourself
  • The events that happen to you in life
  • Your future

When people feel unusually anxious and worried, they almost inevitably distort the way they think about these things. That distortion actually causes much of their anxiety. In the cognitive behavioral approach, the therapist helps the patient capture negative predictions and catastrophic outcomes that run through the mind, then guides the patient to search for evidence about his or her true performance and gain a more realistic appraisal of the chances of actually failing.
